A GUIDE FROM THE 22
Dating without swiping.
A different way to meet someone starts with a simple question: what would you like to talk about?
What does dating without swiping mean?
It means meeting people without making a left-or-right decision on a stream of profiles. The first step might be a personal introduction, a live conversation, an invitation through a friend, or meeting at an activity you both enjoy.
You can still date online. You can still care about attraction. The difference is giving yourself something more to respond to before deciding whether you want to spend time together.
If you’re looking for an alternative to dating apps, start with the experience you want: hearing someone’s voice, talking face to face, or making a plan. “No swiping” describes a first step; what happens after it matters just as much.
Start with something you can respond to.
A good introduction gives the other person an opening. Try a small story, an interest you can explain, or a question you’d actually like someone to answer.
- “I tried making pasta from scratch this weekend. What’s something you’ve tried just for fun?”
- “My ideal free afternoon involves a bookshop and nowhere to rush. What would yours look like?”
- “Tell me about a song you always turn up.”
You don’t need a perfect line. Pick something that sounds like you, then notice what makes you curious about their answer. A voice or video introduction can give you a starting point: their story, their expression, or the way they tell a joke.
Make a small, specific invitation.
When you want to keep talking, offer a plan that’s easy to understand and easy to decline. Mention what caught your attention and suggest a time or an activity.
“Your story about that last-minute trip made me smile. Want to meet for a twenty-minute video date on Thursday evening?”
That’s an invitation, not an obligation. Give the other person room to suggest another time or say no. If you’re in different places, include your time zone.
Give the first date a little shape.
For a virtual first date, choose a setting and one easy thing to do together. It could be a question about your week, a light game, or simply a conversation. Our virtual date ideas offer a few starting points.
Agree on a short first meeting, such as twenty minutes. Check your microphone beforehand, put other notifications aside, and leave room for both of you to speak. You can skip an activity or end the conversation whenever you want.
At the end, ask yourself whether you’d like another conversation. You don’t have to decide where everything is going. A warm goodbye is enough, whether or not you make another plan.
How The 22 approaches dating without swiping.
The 22’s member experience starts with a real recorded introduction, a personal invitation, and a planned twenty-minute date in a shared virtual venue. The idea is to give two people a reason to show up and a place to get to know each other.
Explore a rooftop, a jazz lounge or a seaside terrace. Talk with real voice and optional video, with shared activities if you want them. A phone or computer is enough; a headset is optional.
Member dating hasn’t opened yet. You can explore the public demo now, either with someone you know in a private room or through a clearly labeled fictional solo sample. The demo doesn’t match you with a new person.
The free waitlist is open worldwide to adults 18+. About The 22 explains how the experience works and what you can try today. Whether you’re new to online dating, trying again or simply curious, you’re welcome to take a look.
